On a typical Saturday night, Raina’s Sports Lounge in downtown Sulphur was packed with regulars enjoying each other’s company. Suddenly, the walls began to crumble, trapping everyone inside. Owner Raina Valkoun described the chaos and fear that ensued as she struggled to find a way out from under the debris.
Despite the danger, Valkoun remained determined to save her customers. It took 45 minutes for first responders to arrive and rescue everyone safely. Tragically, one long-time friend and customer did not make it out alive.
Valkoun is still grappling with grief over the loss of her friend and business, but she remains grateful for surviving the ordeal. She hopes that her friend found a way to survive as well and is thankful for the gift of life. The impact of the storm has left a profound effect on Valkoun and her community, who are now coping with loss while being grateful for their survival.
