Russian authorities have recently arrested Deputy Defense Minister Ivanov on charges of bribery, a crime that could carry a potential 15-year prison sentence. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (SKR) announced that Ivanov was taken into custody under clause 6, article 290 of the Russian penal code for bribery. No information has been released about the amount of money Ivanov is alleged to have received, but Russian media reports suggest it could be at least one million rubles (more than 10,000 USD).

At a meeting at the Ministry of Defense on April 23, Mr. Timur Ivanov was seen before his arrest. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister General Sergey Shoigu were informed about Ivanov’s arrest. Ivanov is 48 years old and has held various positions in fuel and energy trading companies and the Moscow province government before joining the Ministry of Defense in 2010. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense in 2016 and holds the title of state councilor of the first rank, making him one of Russia’s wealthiest individuals according to Forbes.
